Local MP to get a right royal soaking for carnival

Leave the first response May 2, 2013 / Posted in General

North Wiltshire MP, James Gray will be participating in the Carnival’s ‘Soak a Yokel’ event on Saturday 11th May, outside the Town Hall on Wootton Bassett High Street.

For a minimum donation of £2, members of the public will have 3 chances of hitting a special target. If hit, James will get a soaking. The event is being run by the Carnival Committee to raise additional funds for the procession.

The region’s MP will join town councillors, the town crier, business people and teachers who will all take their turn in getting a soaking.

Jon White, Carnival Committee member said: “Everyone loves the carnival, it’s such an important annual event for our community. However what most people don’t realise is how expensive it is to run these days. It costs over £4,000 to run and the figure rises each year. Our insurance costs alone have doubled this year.

We’re hugely grateful to James for agreeing to participate. When asked if he would be involved, there was no hesitation in his response.

The carnival is funded by company donations and money collected during the procession. This year, the carnival committee have been able to fund free drumming lessons within all 5 Wootton Bassett schools, thanks to a Wiltshire Area Board grant. Wootton Bassett Town Council have also kindly funded the purchase of new collecting buckets and tins, as the old ones were falling apart and becoming unsafe.

A timetable and full list of victims volunteers will be published on our Facebook page in the next few days. Don’t forget to ‘Like’ it to stay up-to-date.

  • Wiltshire Council’s Wootton Bassett & Cricklade Area Board donated £2,580 to fund community project
  • All five schools within Wootton Bassett are taking part
  • 900 children have the opportunity to take part with up to 110 able to perform on carnival day.

Thanks to Wootton Bassett & Cricklade Area Board funding, Wootton Bassett Carnival Committee have arranged for Kaya Rhythm & Arts to run 5, 1 day workshops for all five schools in Royal Wootton Bassett. 900 children have attended drumming workshops. 110 of these will perform to the town on carnival day.

The schools; Wootton Bassett Infants, St. Bartholomew’s, Longleaze, Noremarsh and Royal Wootton Bassett Academy have all completed their pre-carnival training days. Selection is now underway for the children who will be performing for the town on 18th May.

Jenn White, Carnival Committee member and project organiser said: “By working with the children of the town, and giving them this opportunity, it is hoped to inspire them so that they feel valued within the community. We wanted to organise a project that encouraged the children of the town to work collaboratively, developing a stronger community. This project will encourage children to work together who may otherwise not meet.

Many of Royal Wootton Bassett’s children don’t have the opportunity to try different sports, skills or clubs. Thanks to this Area Board Youth Grant from Wiltshire Council, the project has allowed nearly 900 children throughout the town to experience a skill that’s not usually on the curriculum. The carnival procession and stage will provide a platform for the children to perform for their town .

On carnival day, the youngest children will perform on the High Street stage with the largest drums and the older children will take part in the procession, playing smaller drums.

Notes to Editor:

  • Wootton Bassett Carnival is being held on Saturday 18 May
  • The procession leaves Marlow Way at 4.30PM and reaches the High Street at approx. 5:45PM
  • Scarrott’s fun fair will be operating on Showfields immediately afterwards.

On Saturday 11 May, we’ll be lining-up a list of willing ‘volunteers’ and you will have the opportunity to give them a right royal soaking!

Dunk a Director / Soak a Yokel!

For a minimum donation of £1, you’ll get 3 balls to throw at a target. If you hit the bulls-eye, you’ll soak the unlucky soul who’s sat in our very special carnival throne!

Yes, we’ll have councillors, teachers, company bosses and well known faces from around our town, all taking their turn to get a soaking!

Who do you want to see in ‘the chair’?

We’re still drawing up our ‘hit list’, so please post a comment if you have any suggestions. If you’d like to see your teacher or boss get a soaking, let us know!

We’ll be announcing some names fairly soon on our Facebook page. So don’t forget to ‘Like’ and ‘Share’ for our updates.
